3D Printer: Construction Building of the future

In my Linkage studio we designed a co-working space for the year 2020. Part of that obviously, entailed some research and also a little imagination on future technology that will support the workplace in 10 years. The 3D printer isn't new technology, its been printing small scale models and objects for a while, however in the near future it just may print your office space or house! Recently there have been investigations and actual buildings printed at the human scale (see concrete structure below).

New Technology: Endless Possibilities

Endless forms are possible with the help of 3D digital modeling programs (3ds Max and Rhino)....powerful tools such as a CNC router.  I was lucky enough to explore digital fabrication in my materiality class last year. I created a digital model in Rhino, and laminated several pieces of plywood together and routed my file on the CNC router to create a mold, poured concrete and bammmm...I got some pretty interesting textures. See below for photos, I created cubes using this texture + acrylic.

Textile Mania

So far my internship is moving along and keeping me quite busy - they had me on projects almost right away...I've done everything from rendering 3d models, selecting fabrics and finishes and today I finished my first 32 x 40 material & furniture board (well, it was my first professional one anyway) - quite a process and a lot more work and detail than I thought but hopefully the client will love it and the hard work will pay off! In making furniture boards and ordering samples I deal a lot with textiles in my day to day job. It really got me thinking about applying textiles in applications beyond furniture. I did some research and found some really cool, innovative and sustainable ways textiles are used in architecture.

Fabric and be swamped out as it could be commissioned by different designers. Fabric is made from recycled materials. 

Interior rendering, doesn't quite fit into the theme of textiles but it was just too beautiful not to include! This building is amazing inside and out!

Drops consist of legs of stainless steel and an inner tube covered with recycled upholstery material.  The seat can also be removed from the underframe for use as a "pouffe".

concept + function + purpose + form

Recently I have begun to look for internships specifically in interior design firms. I had a previous internship working for a small but great firm in downtown Oakland, however they didn't go into too much detail on interiors-it was mostly exterior architecture and urban planning (however, it was a wonderful + valuable working experience).  I had a few interviews last week and was offered 2 jobs with in days of interviewing. I went with Resource and Design because I felt it was a good personality fit plus commercial interior design is something I want to pursue after I graduate. Resource and Design is a full service furniture dealership, obviously I will be working in the design department assisting designers with materials library, graphic layouts + material boards and sketchup projects! Yeah for more real project experience! I'm excited to be delving into more interior architecture projects and rumor has it we are going to be getting into more detail on the furniture end for studio this coming semester...we are designing office spaces for the year 2020. That's perfect because Resource and Design does space planning + furniture specking for primarily for heath care and office spaces. I've attached some images of the work they do. If you have a commercial space that needs fancy furniture systems this is your place.

Making The Connection

Last week I volunteered for another IIDA event "Make The Connection", co sponsored and held in the beautiful B&B Italia Showroom in San Francisco (close to the SF design center).  In addition firms like Gensler, Nichols Booth Architects,  Haworth, K2A Architecture,  Resource and Design helped sponsor and make this great event happen. While I volunteered to help with the set up and take down of the event, I also had the pleasure of greeting guests at the front door informing them of the raffle tickets for the auction, which included gift certificates to Macy's, The de Young Museum and furniture pieces. All tickets benefited LEAP for Kids a wonderful & local non profit that brings architects/designers and teachers together to educate children about fine arts and architecture. Not only did I have the pleasure of meeting architects and designers from various firms in the bay area, but I enjoyed the venue of the event - the B&B showroom is an incredible space and their furniture is timeless and amazing. I got really excited and did some research on B&B Italia, they also own 50% of MOOOI a design company specializing in accessories and lighting. I have attached some inspirational images of both. I met Clive Wilkinson

I can't say enough about Clive Wilkinson. As part of my involvement at IIDA student Center at CCA,  I frequently volunteer (or in this case they actually asked me) for events the IIDA Northern California chapter hosts. This summer I volunteered to help with the set up and take down for the IIDA Pioneers in Design Event where Clive Wilkinson was honored for his brilliant interior architecture. He gave a beautiful slide show presentation on his work and following his lecture they had a buffet style reception where fancy food such as risotto, chocolate covered strawberries and champagne were served. We were able to take a break from volunteer duties and schmooze with the other architects and designers that came to the event including Clive Wilkinson! Not only is he talented, but he is humble and down to earth, definitely NOT an arrogant know it all. I pulled some images to share, because his work is too beautiful to go unnoticed. I am struck by his use of color,  materiality and organic forms-the spaces are both innovative plus functional!
